Discuss female leadership in the twenty-first century seems outdated, but only now women are beginning to be recognized as effective leaders. Only in this century, recognition of the advantages of feminine qualities within organizations is being discussed. Not only for organizations, but for society as a whole, women’s participation in the labor context and the reflections of the way she thinks, acts and feels about the phenomena highlighted in the complexity, reach a much larger dimension than you think.

More and more companies are valuing human behavior and using behavioral skills for better results. In a highly competitive environment, relationships are the focus of professional development and women, now with more space and emphasis, have been lending her feminine skills to organizational development.

The female characteristics go towards what contemporary organizations are looking for: highly concerned people to self-development, who can get out of the comfort zone, which by their sensitivity are able to identify the needs of those around them and who can care for people and be concerned about the environment.

The female behavior differ from men, especially in the exercise of leadership positions. Values and beliefs appear with much evidence in the management of people and produce quite different results. It is clear that, in the organizational environment, men and women leadership can contribute differently and also add different results to organizations.  Women have characteristics that fit perfectly in leadership positions, but in order to understand the female influence, it is important to keep in mind the differences often subtle governing these two genres.

Studies show that men in leadership positions have a sloping behavior to be independent , assertive and competent, while women tend to be friendly, expressive and not selfish. From this perspective, it becomes clear that the masculine and feminine characteristics, as the leadership behavior, differ in their essence, exercising, each distinct influences on the team and the organization as a whole. Historically, leadership has been wagered as a male role and many theories consider male characteristics as natural attributes of a leader. However, it is very likely that female characteristics, such as cooperation, coaching and collaboration, are equally or more important when compared to men, especially in contemporary organizational environments where the quality of human relationship is highly valued. The female lead can be seen as interactive, collaborative and empowering, while the male, as command-control, involving assertiveness in authority and accumulation of power . Studies show that men usually bet more on old leadership styles which no longer fit in today’s organizations, while women focus on a “revolutionary leadership” and also demonstrate a more democratic style, especially in decision-making.

Experts consider the most effective leadership style for women’s transformational leadership, transactional and laissez-faire. Were it not for the historical barriers on positioning and women acceptance in organizational environments, companies would already be way ahead in relationship, human development, and hence on results. Contemporary companies are focused on having committed leaders, engaged and involved in the business and that, moreover, are in a constant search to achieve healthy and productive relationships in the workplace. The current leadership is not focused only on the qualities listed above, but also in the search for a more targeted approach in being a coach or “teacher.” Are women ready for it? The answer is yes! They are more than ready! The female leader generally demonstrates great care with the team and can tell what each individual needs to achieve better results. She can see the members of his team in a more holistic way, a result of the culture in which she was created, the emphasis on caring and realizing the family needs. In this way, it simply changes the focus and apply her whole way of being in business. The woman comes out ahead in the organizational environment, she brings such as maternal characteristics, the gift of teaching, to be a coach, while the male leader, generally, need to learn these skills.  What female leader does is to adapt her role as a woman in the corporate environment and we have to recognize, this adaptation can have many benefits for the climate and the performance of organizations who value and accept the female leadership as a strategic role.

Recent studies show that aiming to achieve leadership positions, woman needs to study and devote much more than a man in search of the same roles. Thus, it is evident that theoretically and technically they are better prepared than men. Some management gurus believe that to hire a great executive it is enough to hire a woman. Business Week published an article called “New Gender Gap,” “Men may be losers in a global economy that values more mental power than the power.” While the man has already determined and guaranteed his leading role in society, the woman lives in a constant struggle to prove to herself and everyone that she is also capable.  The female leader generally demonstrates great care with the team and can tell what each individual needs to achieve better results. She can see the members of her team in a way of comprehensive knowledge of the business, its staff and its environment. Strives more to build and maintain her credibility in the team and this effort beast extra benefits both for her and for the organization. Eventhough the female behavior characteristics are highly valued in corporate environments, there is strong resistance to it. There is a unconscious lack of  credibility for the female leader simply because she is a woman. There is a fine line in deciding what kind of behavior should be exercised and what kind of behavior is expected of women leaders by their peers, superiors and subordinates. One of the biggest obstacles in contemporary women’s corporate history is the belief that leadership has more similarity to the male figure than to the female figure. And it is interesting to note that the woman adopts a command-control style or be composed of an extremely assertive mode is vulnerable to being misjudged by his team. Paradoxically, men who exhibit the same behavior are praised. If we consider that the key to successful leadership is the power to influence people, we can say that women have an advantage since they have better skills for communication compared to men and this undoubtedly facilitates power of persuasion and influence in the formation of corporate coalitions. Androgen behavior, which is a mixture of female behavior characteristics with male behavior, may be the major key to success over time for the ultimate pinnacle of women’s leadership in organizations. The awareness to be made at this point is: how and at what time adopting each behavior characteristic; the women leaders who can align these questions surely have much success. Contemporary organizations seeking leaders with global vision are able to analyze and understand the world from different prisms, to lead people from different countries, with different languages and doing business in different cultural environments.

A company that has men and women in command has a much broader view of the business for the simple multiple views that genres offer. Having transformational leadership as indicator of success, good transformational leader needs to be motivational, positive, concerned about the team, empowering and stimulating creativity and the opportunities for the team. In this sense, one can say that women have much more transformational qualities that man, demonstrating a high leadership potential and effectiveness, naturally. Women leaders end up putting into practice within organizations, everything is already built into their gender behavior. They are ready to focus on business without forgetting the people around. They are more prepared to win the medium and long term. It makes a difference in the negotiations and on the understanding that occasionally is better to lose a little here to win later. They use human capital to aggregate. Get results pitched with a charismatic and engagement, again, they do it naturally. In a world where competitiveness is on the rise, in which people need to work more and better, multifocal capacity is one of the most important points of the female leadership. It allows everyone, independent of the genre to solve several things at once with mastery and still see micro details that men often fail to see.

Contemporary companies seek leaders who can inspire the heart of the team and expand collaboration, which create a climate of trust and facilitation of relationship. Women have much to contribute, as they are, in practice, more human and more concerned about the quality of relationships. In general, they have in mind that happy teams produce better results. Ability to innovate, convince others, to sell ideas, engage people, dealing with “jealousies” and interact with the psycho-social system of the organization are essential activities in project driving.  Contemporary companies realize that the female leader carries with them the gifts of motherly aiming to mentor people on their development. These maternal characteristics, if used in the correct measure in the corporate environment, tend to benefit the quality of relationships in the team. Moreover, it helps people to develop, it has more opportunities to expand their knowledge and increase their credibility.

Considering the 360 degree relationship prism, communication and power to influence, the female lead is ready to add high level of results, focusing on developing, challenging, recognize, reward and celebrate resulting in high performance teams. In this context, a motivated and committed group, which runs behind a dream, certainly produces better results. Innovation and development of a high performance team requires energy, dedication and a lot of interpersonal dynamics. The motivation to do things differently, make the difference and achieve new heights is a sensational fuel to the organizational environment. A woman leader, with its multiple views, has great ease in promoting the dream, and thus motivate the team. The balance between the characteristics of feminine sensitivity and masculine assertiveness must be present in contemporary companies and their leaders , regardless of gender. Learn to live with the organization boiling and concentrate on seeking recognition of their work by internal and external customers through the use of the mix of behaviors , should be the goal of everyone in the corporate world. Take a look at your internal desktop, try to use male and female tools. Leaders have in hand the power to resonate (positive) or dissonate (negative). You need to make your leadership memorable to your subordinates. This means undisputed success in the process of lead. Go ahead making a difference , take risks , dare and be number 1 in relationships and results. Do not hesitate , act ! The advice is mine, however, the choice is yours!
